Gold Star Communication Week!

Tristan has made communication progress this week.  Just wanted to share!

On Monday…

Tristan was sitting at the kitchen table.   He said, “I want milk.”

Talking about food is not new.  Usually it is one or two words of speech or a sentence using his communication device.  I was pleasantly surprised to hear a whole sentence.  This was a spontaneous sentence!

On Wednesday…

I caught Tristan in the laundry room.  This is never good!  He looked me in the eyes and said,

“Tristan please put that back.” ( yes he was correcting himself in the laundry room)

On Thursday…

After we came home from an outdoor concert Tristan started crying.  Tears streaming down his face.  I grabbed his communication device to prompt him.  I was unsure if he would be able to communicate what was wrong.

Tristan quickly found the button.

Tristan said, “I feel sick.”
Brian gave Tristan some medicine.  Tristan smiled.  I imagine he was proud to be able to communicate his need and then it was addressed.

On Friday…

I called Brian to let him know I would pick up some fast food after picking up Jacob from the YMCA. I left a voicemail on Brian’s phone.  As Tristan and I were headed out the front door the negotiations began.

Tristan said, “Jacob. Y. McDonald’s. Taco Bell.”

I explained that we could go to both places.  He would not go down the front porch steps until he was certain I understood what he wanted.

I love hearing Tristan’s voice.  I always praise him for the efforts he makes.  Jacob said it best, “We underestimate him.”  Yes we do.  We forget how much of the world around him he takes in.

  1. I still completely loved when he said “Stella” so clearly. Also when he not only signed “Aunt” but then said it the next time ….it almost brought tears to my eyes. 🙂
